We have noted our daily expenses in Hong Kong this time round. It is a habit we want to start so that we can keep track of our budget closely. To summarise, Hong Kong is expensive. We budgeted around 250 SGD/day for all our necessities, shopping and gifts.
TD:LR; Here’s the breakdown of our expenses in Hong Kong for 5D4N (for two).
Expenses for our Hong Kong Trip |
We estimated some of the expenses because we didn’t diligently note down the exact amount.
Day 1: 1082 HKD (~198 SGD)
Food: 321 HKD (~58 SGD)
We had our lunch at a random Cha Chaan Teng near the hotel. Ordered two main courses with two drinks. This costs 124 HKD. We went to 7-11 twice to get some snacks and beer. This added up to be 67 HKD. We went to a Taiwanese eatery in Mong Kok for our dinner. It costs 85 HKD for one meal set (one bowl of Noodle + two side dishes + 1 drinks) and one bowl of ala carte noodle. We also bought a bottle of mineral water from a random newspaper store. We had a bowl of curry fishball in Mong Kok too at 40 HKD.
Transport: 300 HKD (~55 SGD)
We bought two Octopus cards at 150 HKD/card (50 HKD deposit, 100 HKD value) from Airport Terminal.
Shopping: 360 HKD (~66 SGD)
The human bought a iPhone phone case at 50 HKD. Well it was supposed to be 69 HKD or something. We walked away and the store owner gave us a 19 HKD discount. It costs about 10 SGD on Taobao so we did fetch a good price. The human also bought 2 dresses at 200 HKD. Somehow managed to purchase a top and another outer for 90 HKD in Argyle Centre before we decided to go back our hotel.
We also purchased a foldable bag at 20 HKD. Nowadays, it is always good to have a foldable bag in the daily travel pack as most countries are not providing (or charging money) for plastic bags.
So much so from Mong Kok.

We bought some snacks from Koi Kei for the family. 3 boxes of them totalled up to 92 HKD.

Before we leave Tung Chung, we chilled at a bar near the station with 2 frozen Kirin and 1 hotdog meal for 194 HKD. We bought some streets food at Causeway bay (can’t remember the price either).

When we were back in Hong Kong, we spent 106 HKD on streets food (BBQ items). We went to 7-11 and spent 56 HKD. We also bought some stuffs from supermarket for 47 HKD. What can We Learnt?
It seems like we don’t really control our expenses on food. We suspected we spent most of our money on food and beer. Normally, we cater about 100 SGD/day for our trips. It looks like it is nearly impossible to do so in Hong Kong since the price of the food is on a higher side. It is even more impossible to keep it to 100 SGD/day if we are traveling to Macau.
Hong Kong is a near enough place for a short getaway. However, it is an expensive place too! We thought that we might prefer to go for Bangkok if we are looking for a place to relax and chill.
